Sakai 2.9 Upgrade - Summer 2013

Based on faculty feedback, we will be upgrading Sakai to version 2.9 for Fall 2013.

In Spring 2013, we contacted all faculty to introduce a new version of Sakai and solicit feedback on whether Wellesley should upgrade. This email included a brief feature list, access to the upgraded version in a test environment and invitations to open sessions with IT (instructional technology) staff.

Based on the positive feedback we received from faculty and the feature updates we will move ahead with the upgrade this summer. Most of the system enhancements in this upgrade are invisible (such as over 500 bug fixes); however, there are some nice new features, such as drop-down menus replacing the tabs across the top of the screen.

Other improvements:

  • "Paste from Word" text cleanup is now automatic.
  • Text editing can be done fullscreen.
  • Gradebook now allows drop highest, drop lowest keep highest grade options.
  • A new tool called Lessons includes the ability for students to create content and comment on pages.
  • The text editor tool now works on mobile devices. Post to forums, set up assignments, and more from your smartphone or tablet.
We will be upgrading the system on July 29 (first Monday after Summer School ends).

Faculty teaching and advising research projects this summer will continue to work with the current version of Sakai. We will be contacting faculty using Sakai in Summer Session 2 since Sakai will be upgraded after classes, but before grades are due.

Faculty wanting to access a test environment of 2.9 over the summer to familiarize themselves with the upgrade should check out version 2.9 by going to https://devsakai.wellesley.edu (log-in using your Wellesley domain account). When you log in you should see some test course sites. These sites currently have no content. Feel free to add what you like.

Faculty support will be available during course support drop-in hours in the weeks before fall classes begin. Faculty may also call x4848 or contact their department's Instructional Technology Subject Specialist http://www.wellesley.edu/lts/helppage/subjectspec for help over the phone or to schedule an office visit.

If you have any questions about this upgrade or the use of Sakai and/or Google Apps for your courses please contact the Instructional Technology Support Line at x4848.
